What is SEO? Complete Beginners Guide

Why Do We Need SEO

Hi everyone my name is Heysho.

I’m an SEO expert based in Tokyo.

I work for an international company as an SEO and Content Lead.

Other than working for my company, I’ve been blogging for about 8 years and published more than 500 articles getting 200,000 page views per month as of 2020.April.

I’m still learning every day and on my way to be one of the best SEO experts in Today, but I can still teach people who don’t know much about SEO.

Today, I’m gonna teach you about what is SEO.

For the heads up, this is a complete beginner guide so I’m not going to talk about every detail or use any technical words so that anyone can understand the basic knowledge and outline of what is SEO within 3 minutes.

Heysho

Let’s get started!

What is SEO

What is SEO?

Do you know what is SEO? Or what SEO means??

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

It’s a technic to help improve ranking on Google search.

There are 3 ways to implement SEO tactics on your website.

  • 1st is to optimize content
  • 2nd is to optimize coding
  • 3rd is to optimize reputation from others

STEP 1 – Optimize Content

Content SEO

For content optimization, it’s about telling Google and the visitors that we have every information that they’re looking for.

In other words, you need to make sure that you have all the right keywords on your website.

For example, if your website is about Ramen, then you want to make sure that your website has the right keywords in the title, in the body, in the image descriptions, and also supporting keywords in headings for example best Ramen restaurants, History of Ramen, Ramen recipes, types of Ramen, and everything else that is related to that topic.

Process of Content Optimization

There are 3 steps to apply the content optimization process.

  • 1st is to find target keywords by Keyword Research and match your contents to the user’s needs
  • 2nd is to apply On-Page Optimization by a variety of techniques
  • 3rd is to track the rankings to see the performance

Content Optimization is relatively controllable and easier for the company’s website.

For me, it’s probably the first thing to do for SEO.

Moving on to the 2nd tactic.

STEP 2 – Optimize Coding

Technical SEO

For coding optimization, you want to make sure that Google’s algorithm can find your website page and recognize the content easily.

To give you a better idea, we follow Google’s guidelines for HTML and CSS so that it’s clear and easier for Google to find your website.

Do you have to have the coding experience?

Coding optimization sometimes gets too technical.

If you work in a company, you might need to work with web developers and send requests to fix the problems.

It’s good to have basic knowledge of coding skills so that you can easily troubleshoot the common bugs or errors and improve technical part of SEO yourself.

If you have this coding experience, you don’t have to constantly communicate with agencies or website developers in order to solve these technical issues.

STEP3 – Improve Reputation

Backlink SEO

Finally, for reputation, you want to make sure that the website contents are valuable so that other people want to link to your website.

For example, show your research and experiment with results or any useful information for your target audience.

You could also reach out to some bloggers and influencers after you publish your content, so they could link their contents to your website.

Japanese Market vs Western Market

For me, this process is a lot harder for the Japanese market compared to the western market because these tactics are relatively new to the Japanese market.

For example, in the US, I worked with some agencies to reach out to the bloggers and influencers, but in Japan, I didn’t find many agencies who can provide the same service.

Benefit of SEO

What is this product??

What you can do here is to target these keywords, rank them, and provide your answers or solutions to them.

In the end, you can introduce your products or services to the users.

To give you an idea of how this works, let me introduce the Sales Funnel

Sales Funnel

Questions from Users before Purchase

Sales Funnel is about how users move from Search to Action.

Typically users search for the 3 types of keywords.

  • 1st is a question type of keywords. For example, what is an Action Camera, How to use an action camera
  • 2nd is comparison keywords. For example, Action Camera comparison, GoPro vs Osmo, Types of GoPro
  • 3rd is transactional keywords. For example, How to buy GoPro, GoPro Price, Where to buy GoPro

Your goal is to make sure your website is ranking on top of every keyword and guide them into your sales funnel.

Overall

Overall, SEO is always challenging and frustrating because we need to keep testing what’s working and what’s not, Google’s algorithm keeps changing and it takes time to see the result.

But I like what I am doing because I believe that SEO is a powerful tool to increase website traffic and conversions.

I hope this article was helpful for you to understand what is SEO.
